First published in 1982, Authority by E. D. Watt, is a profound exploration of the concept of authority in its many dimensions—philosophical, moral, religious, and civil. Through nine meticulously crafted chapters, Watt examines the roots of authority (auctoritas), its misuse in authoritarianism, and its practical manifestations in society. The book delves into the interplay between authority and knowledge, the moral and religious foundations of rightful authority, and the delicate balance between the right to command and the obligation to obey. With a critical eye on civil authority and its implications, Watt offers a comprehensive framework for understanding authority's role in shaping human behavior and governance. A timeless work, it remains essential reading for those interested in sociology, ethics, and political theory.
