An Ethic for Enemies: Forgiveness in Politics

Donald W. Shriver
en Limba Engleză Paperback – 9 apr 1998
Shriver shows that the concept of forgiveness, long relegated to the realm of the personal, is surprisingly relevant and important to political life. He uses three examples from recent American history - our relations with Germany and Japan, and the civil rights struggle - to show the importance of forgiveness in overcoming the traditional hatreds that threaten to cripple our society.

Recenzii

Sometimes a book appears at precisely the right time. Shriver's An Ethic for Enemies: Forgiveness in Politics should be required reading for political leaders, educators, clergy, the media and so-called ordinary citizens ... Shriver brilliantly describes whu and how human conflicts can be successfully resolved ... Shriver's hard-headed realism about radical evil prevents him from offering naive sermons that simply condemn the enmity that exists among individuals, groups and nations. Shriver lives in the real world along with the rest of us.
a much needed and well-argued concept of forgiveness as an essential ingredient in political reconciliation...this is a deeply disturbing book because it faces us with ultimate human dilemmas.
There is plenty of grist for the moral mill here. Will it, can it, yield an ethic for enemies?
Coherent and disciplined theological enquiries...rich in reference.
