HE WENT IN AT FOURTEEN. HE CAME HOME AT EIGHTEEN. HE LOST EVERYTHING AT NINETEEN - AND NOT ONE SHOT WAS FIRED.
Amari Ellis did four years for a robbery a grown man sent him to do. He came home to North Omaha with a stash nobody could find and a plan nobody could stop, and by the end of that summer he had four hundred thousand dollars, a body on his hands, and no way on God's earth to put a single dollar of it in his own name.
They didn't take it from him with a gun. They took it with a typed title and two polite conversations.
Five years later he's back. Twenty-four years old, money in four places, paper in two states, and a name the State of Nebraska finally recognizes. The man who set him up at fourteen is still sitting on the north side and still smiling at people in church. The four buildings Amari grew up in are coming down in September. And five hundred families have to be somewhere by the fall.
He came home to take a crown.
What he finds is a woman who does paperwork on 30th Street, a ten-year-old who keeps a spare rock in case he loses the first one, and a truth about the man who raised him that's been sitting in a bank box for ten years with his own name on the card.
In Omaha there's forty thousand of us. Everybody you gon' meet, you already met.
The streets don't take everything at once. They take it a signature at a time.
