Always Ours: The Science and Soul of Raising Children of Color
Autor Michele Hamiltonen Limba Engleză Hardback – 7 aug 2027
Raising and educating children has never been neutral for families of color. For Black, Brown, Indigenous, and other marginalized communities, every act of care takes place beneath a gaze that distorts, surveils, and punishes. Yet each morning, parents braid hair, pack lunches, sign permission slips, and whisper, "you are loved." Those daily gestures teach our children who they are, transforming fear and scarcity into safety, joy, and belonging.
In Always Ours, Michele Hamilton draws on three decades as a school founder, educator, and parent coach--and on lived experience as the daughter of a Black mother and white father--to reveal how we can raise children of color who are seen, heard, and confident in themselves. She does this by introducing readers to the MIRROR Framework--six interlocking practices that utilize science, time-tested strategies, and ancestral wisdom to help parents as well as educators counter systemic distortion and cultivate resilience, identity, and wholeness--and shows them how to integrate the system seamlessly into their own communities.
Always Ours honors what parents and educators already do well, but also speaks directly to the very real difficulties that families of color navigate--from internalized fear and exhaustion to external bias and inequity--and offers practical, grounded tools to help them reclaim joy, trust, and presence in their homes and communities.
