Always in the Making: A Practical Philosophy of Ensemble Improvisation: Routledge Advances in Theatre & Performance Studies
Autor Jennifer Kayleen Limba Engleză Hardback – 7 apr 2027
Not merely theorizing improvisation from the outside, this book also writes from within it, blending vivid description, precise gestures, and lyric passages that distil its complexity. The analysis moves across nested levels of scale, mirroring the improvisation ensemble it studies. Close in, it philosophizes about action itself—asking where intention, reflection, and knowledge reside in the moment of moving, grounded in an embodied epistemology drawn from thirty years of practice-as-research in dance improvisation and Gallagher's 4E cognition. One level out, the improvising ensemble becomes a test case for Bratman's collective action theory and the science of self-organizing systems, revealing how autonomy and collectivity, individual acts and emergent group organization, work together. Further out still, Nguyen's game aesthetics and Born's social aesthetics relocate value and aesthetic experience in process and relation, examining how practices, identities, and institutions are entangled.
This book will appeal to scholars and students of philosophy, dance and performance studies, aesthetics, and cognitive science, as well as improvising artists and practitioners studying embodiment, creativity, collective action, and selfhood as always in the making.

Recenzii
“Inviting, witty, and profoundly insightful, Jennifer Kayle’s book is a triumph for both the dance community and the broader improvisation studies community. Blending creative pedagogy and vivid descriptions of practice with rigorous philosophical inquiry, Kayle explores the properties that make improvisation distinct, the dynamics that allow an ensemble to become more than its members, and the vexed question of how we value work that exists only in the making. She writes with an appealing directness, interspersing philosophical arguments with more conversational prose that invites the reader inside the dance studio, where ensembles must invent a work together, with no script and no safety net. Developing research on joint action theory, emergent self-organization, and social aesthetics, her work offers new perspectives, ultimately arguing that the skills of ensemble improvisation are also skills for living: listening, responding, and finding freedom inside constraint. Equal parts memoir, manual, and philosophical inquiry, Always in the Making offers clear, engaging, and beautifully written explorations of what it means to create together.”
David Borgo, Ph.D., Professor of Music, UC San Diego
''This book is a masterful integration of several domains, as Kayle weaves in strands from conversations with students, fragments of poetic thought that capture the “what it is like” aspect of dance practice and then ties these together with research in theoretical philosophy and cognitive science. She begins with general properties of improvisation, and then expands to include ontologies of ways of improvising in dance before addressing the challenges and ethos of including and responding to others in ensemble work. The book ends, quite satisfyingly for those of us who recognize the coda (the “big jumps”) section that ends many ballet classes, with a culmination of energy that signifies both triumph for the rigorous work done and that opens new possibilities for the future. A must-read for those serious about including the art in philosophy of art.''
Aili Whalen, JD, PhD (formerly Aili Bresnahan), Former Associate Professor and Fulbright research scholar in the philosophy of dance
“This is such a necessary and important book! The world needs to know about dance improvisation. It is the essence of our social being, it’s how we relate. For 30 years, Kayle has lived improvisation, and this book brings improvisational dancing to the world, improvising together as an art form. Kayle moves across levels from philosophical abstraction to the lived reality of dance as action in the world. This readable and powerful book is a welcome addition to the literature on group creativity and improvisation.”
Dr. Keith Sawyer, Morgan Distinguished Professor in Educational Innovations, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
“This insightful, practice-driven project is an important contribution to the field of dance philosophy. It is an asset for dance artists, philosophers, and anyone who savors spontaneous decision-making in group contexts.”
Eric C. Mullis, Ph.D., MFA, Associate Professor of Philosophy, Queens University of Charlotte
''In Always in the Making, Jennifer Kayle tackles the question, “What are we talking about anyway?” as both prompt and dare. The book develops a philosophy of ensemble dance improvisation through a contemplative process that, like its subject, works with what comes before, solves problems of its own making, sustains awareness and responsiveness, and moves between spontaneity and reflection. Written for readers versed in improvisational practices and those newly interested, the book unfolds with the wit, inventiveness, and keen awareness Kayle has honed over a career of immersive, collaborative endeavor. This is an inviting and thought-provoking read, one that expands our understanding of improvisation in dance, philosophy, and beyond.''
Rebekah J. Kowal, Professor, University of California, Los Angeles
''Jennifer Kayle in her new book, has embarked on a serious investigation of how we think about and create meaning from group improvisational practices. She emphasizes the importance of ‘making’, the act of agency and collective creation in an intentional, artistic and compelling experience of group dynamics. Her extensive embodied research enlightens the study, teaching and performance of this unique and powerful dance form that serves as an entrance into a portal of mystery, intensity, critical thinking and creativity.''
