Affective Moments: Fragments of Immigrant Becoming: New Perspectives on Teaching Interculturality

Autor Dave Yan
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 23 feb 2027
This book offers a bold reimagining of academic research by challenging conventional understandings of identity, culture, and everyday encounters, opening new methodological possibilities for qualitative inquiry.
Crafting his own life as an immigrant teacher into a source of meaning, the author reimagines academic writing not simply as an examination of cultural difference, but as an ongoing, often painful process of becoming otherwise. Refusing the detached voice of traditional scholarship, he engages in meta-reflexivity, showing how memory, emotion, and embodiment generate a living theory that unfolds across time and place. Through a creative blend of memoir, poetry, lyrics, drama, theory, and performance autoethnography, the book develops an original experimental form that captures the contradictions and uncertainties of migrant life. The fragmented form mirrors the discontinuities of immigrant becoming, while theoretical insights emerge organically from lived realities of being rather than overshadowing them. In doing so, it challenges the tendency of conventional qualitative scholarship to position immigrant teachers as objects of research. Instead, it foregrounds self-knowledge as a critical act of reclaiming narrative authorship and transformative potential.
This experimental work invites scholars and students of intercultural communication, autoethnography, educational research and cultural studies to reconsider conventional research paradigms, embrace uncertainty and complexity, and reinvent what academic writing might become for the self, others, and futures yet to be envisaged.

Recenzii

“‘Theory as a way of living,’ the principal impulse of Dave Yan’s work, is the most onerous and least understood – but essential – calling of the scholar. Affective Moments documents the difficulty and vitality of life/theory as refuge and resistance for the immigrant scholar. Nothing less – or more – than a life.”
Sean Sturm, Associate Professor, Faculty of Arts and Education, University of Auckland, New Zealand; Co-editor of Knowledge Cultures
“This book is a timely model of personal and professional integrity in philosophy and research. I was particularly touched by Yan’s attentiveness to ordinary moments. The book compels readers to find their voice and engage in the kind of research that makes a difference. By design, it remains unfinished.”
Nicholas F. Mazza, Dean and Patricia V. Vance Professor Emeritus, College of Social Work, Florida State University, USA; Past President, National Association for Poetry Therapy
“Poetic, political, and deeply theorised,  Affective Moments carries the reader into and through the everyday moments and spaces of Yan’s rendering of an immigrant teacher’s life. Always compelling, often moving, sometimes provocative, this outstanding book summons the reader to listen, to pay attention, to respond, and to act.”
Jonathan Wyatt, Professor, Co-director of the Centre for Creative-Relational Inquiry, The University of Edinburgh, UK; Author of Writing the Everyday: Body, Place, Time
