Act and Being: God's Dynamism in the Theology of Thomas F. Torrance: T&T Clark
Autor Revd Dr Alex Irvingen Limba Engleză Hardback – 18 feb 2027
Torrance's treatment of revelation as self-revelation whereby we share in God's knowledge of God's self entails that the world-relation of revelation is proper to the being of God. How the proposition that God's being is eternally in act impacts Torrance's treatment of trinitarian ontology, vis-à-vis the unity of the divine being, perichoresis, the divine Monarchia and the Filioque. How the proposition that God's economic act is identical to the being of God shapes Torrance's kerygmatic theology, particularly with reference to the doctrines of creation and redemption. A consideration of where Torrance can be situated amongst other "post-Barthians" in order to contend that Torrance's position on the nature of divine freedom is not that of absolute ontological independence (as is frequently supposed).

Recenzii
Torrance himself once admitted: 'My weakness, I think, is my style. I do not know a way to put my theology across that makes for easy reading'. Alex Irving's exposition goes a long way in addressing this lacuna. His account of Torrance's doctrine of God tackles highly dense theological material through engaging prose and precise theological argumentation. The end result is a remarkably lucid and elegant account of one of the most complex areas of Torrance's thought. As Torrance's theology continues to gain a global theological footprint, I highly recommend works such as Irving's to theologians across the world.
The theology of Thomas F. Torrance continues to yield significant insight for successive generations of readers, and this volume offers a timely and penetrating examination of his doctrine of the Trinity. At once deeply rooted in orthodox Christian confession and rigorously attuned to modern theological concerns, Torrance's doctrine of God contains numerous insights that have not always been fully appreciated by earlier interpreters. Irving's study brings these dimensions into sharper focus, elucidating key aspects of Torrance's Trinitarian vision and situating them thoughtfully within the horizon of contemporary theological questions and debates. This is a work of careful scholarship that rewards patient reading and sustained critical engagement.
