Following In the Footsteps of Herodotus and Journey to Classical Greece, Antonio Penadés concludes his journey through Asia Minor and Greece, thus bringing to a close a trilogy that can be read in any order. While in the two previous works he traveled in the footsteps of Herodotus, on this occasion his teenage daughter and the figure of the Irish traveler Edward Dodwell join him on the journey. In the early 19th century, Dodwell undertook one of the first Grand Tours of Italy and Greece. In Rome, he met the architect and draftsman Simone Pomardi, and together they traveled throughout Greece for three years. His is a unique account of a country that was extremely poor, lacking a political identity, and still under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, yet also hospitable, rugged, and full of surprises. Throughout these beautiful, colorful, and engaging pages, the author alternates between his own journey with his daughter and the voices of Herodotus and Dodwell. The journey takes us to the sites of three of the decisive battles of the Greco-Persian Wars: the beach at Marathon, the island of Salamis, and the plain of Plataea. All paths ultimately converge in Athens, where the Acropolis takes center stage and where Xerxes razed its temples. Centuries later, Dodwell witnessed firsthand the plundering carried out there by Lord Elgin. His condemnation of this barbarity allows the author to reflect on that cultural plunder and on the need for the British Museum to return the stolen marbles to Greece. A book steeped in history and philosophy, landscapes and lessons, sensations and emotion, which helps us better understand the world and the origins of our civilization.
