Achalāyatan, Where Time Stood Still: A Play by Rabindranath Tagore

Editat de Ananya Dutta Gupta, Kathleen M. O’Connell
en Limba Engleză Hardback – 9 mar 2027
This annotated translation brings Rabindranath Tagore's (1861–1941) controversial 1911 Bangla play Achalāyatan to contemporary global audiences. The drama follows a young rebel challenging a thousand-year-old monastic institution's stagnation, exploring how organizations lose sight of their founding purpose through institutional ossification, intolerance, and dogma.
Ranking alongside iconic works from Plato to Dickens, Achalāyatan uniquely centres the child as catalyst for change. The translation offers comprehensive scholarly apparatus including extensive introductory material on historical context, early performance history, and literary significance, alongside Tagore's own public defence and analysis of the 1918 redacted version, Guru. It balances Tagorean authenticity with global accessibility through transcontinental collaboration between native Bangla and North American English speakers. Enhanced with a dramatis personae list (absent in the original), and featuring relatable English name equivalents, focused annotations, and comprehensive stage directions as well as a glossary of relevant Bangla words, this edition makes Tagore's avant-garde masterwork accessible without sacrificing scholarly rigour.
Enriched by a Foreword from Professor Ananda Lal, this book will appeal to scholars and students of South Asian literature, comparative literature, theatre and performance studies, and postcolonial studies, as well as theatre directors, dramaturgs, and general readers interested in world drama and Tagore's literary legacy.
