A Place for Wonder: Making Space for Curiosity in the Elementary Classroom
Autor Georgia Heard, Jennifer McDonoughen Limba Engleză Paperback – 14 mai 2027
But in a time of increasing standardization and mandated curriculum, what spaces still remain in schools for children’s ideas, questions and curiosity? The first edition of the best-selling A Place for Wonder introduced readers to a set of small, but powerful practices that opened up endless possibilities for children’s creativity and curiosity in the classroom. Now, in this second edition, Heard and McDonough expand and update their ideas across the elementary curriculum, sharing engaging and accessible ways to bring wonder to every part of the school day.
In this book teachers will learn strategies for teaching in ways that align with both the standards and curriculum we teach and center children’s questions and creativity. The authors share powerful and practical examples for doing this work in classrooms including:
- Setting up wonder centers, discovery tables, and observation windows to engage children from the moment they walk into the classroom each morning
- Centering children’s curiosity in writing through wonder journals, wonder poems, wonder book clubs, and nonfiction wonder writing
- Using outdoor spaces to create simple, but engaging connections with nature including the one small square activity and listening walks
- Connecting with families and the community to support inquiry and curiosity in the classroom and beyond
A Place for Wonder will help teachers reclaim their classrooms as a place where true learning is the norm.

Recenzii
As I read A Place for Wonder, I felt a sudden, urgent ache; a longing for it to magically drop into the hand of every educator I know. This book empowers both teachers and students to reclaim their most precious (and besieged) resource—their attention—and to lovingly point it towards beauty, each other, and the unfamiliar. Through practical curricular extensions and invitations that can be adapted for any age range, Georgia and Jen show how teachers can infuse awe and delight into every moment of the school day. At a time when certainty is often valued over curiosity, this book celebrates the wonder within the words “I don’t know” and introduces habits of thinking that not only boost kids’ engagement and success at school, but prepare them for lives that brim with empathy and joy.
– Lily Howard Scott, Educator and author of The Words That Shape Us and Let Me See
When I first read the first edition of A Place for Wonder almost twenty years ago, I instantly thought, “They get me!” This inspiring second edition of the book reminds us that children’s curiosity belongs at the heart of learning, and Georgia and Jen show teachers how to nurture wonder – even in today’s demanding classrooms.
– Christie Wyman, Kindergarten teacher
It’s easy to believe you want children to have a deep sense of wonder and curiosity. Wonder and the accompanying desire to find out is at the heart of learning. But in the educational world we live in it’s too often for the daily actions in schools to be out of alignment with this important belief. In A Place for Wonder, Georgia and Jen show us the importance of nurturing wonder as a mindset rather than a thing to do. They also show us how to do this with stunning array of practical, intuitive strategies we can use right away, and build on over time. As they write, “Every child deserves to feel moments of awe, curiosity, beauty, mystery, and possibility.” Fortunately for all of us, they show us how.
