A Holding Space While You Wait for Therapy: An Open Letter from Therapist to Client
Autor Jessica Bowersen Limba Engleză Hardback – 25 mai 2026
Written in a relational style and backed by academic research, this book provides an accessible yet rigorous guide to self‑help while waiting for therapy. Each chapter is devoted to exploring a different part of the ‘self’, drawing from Daniel Stern’s ‘self‑psychology’ and the author’s humanistic and integrative perspective. There is guidance on: dealing with feelings and emotions, supporting psychological well‑being, tuning into the body’s wisdom, developing a positive self‑relationship, understanding and improving relationships, connecting with soul and spirituality, and harnessing creativity and the imagination – all with the common purpose of helping and healing.
The open‑letter, easy‑to‑read style makes the content accessible and acts as a companion tool for the reader as they journey through the challenges of life. This is an essential read for clients waiting for therapy, mental health practitioners looking to provide support to waitlisted clients, and trainees or students wanting to better understand the therapeutic journey in full.

Recenzii
'Jessica has developed an insightful and compassionate guide for those who find themselves unable or unready to begin therapy immediately. Her words are not only validating but deeply supportive, offering a sense of hope and reassurance to individuals in this difficult position.
Through her writing, Jessica can be experienced as a companion who is alongside, creating a space for those who may feel isolated or unheard, helping them navigate their emotions while awaiting professional care. The depth of her empathy is clear, as she acknowledges the complex challenges that come with the delay of therapy, offering readers a sense of understanding and encouragement. She offers case vignettes, providing examples of how her advice can be applied in real life. These stories help readers connect with the material and feel less alone in their struggles.
This is an area that has long been overlooked in current literature. Jessica’s work fills this void with remarkable care, offering both practical insights and emotional support in a time when it’s most needed. Her approach is grounded in real-world compassion, meeting readers where they are and providing tools for self-empowerment while they wait for the professional help they deserve.'
Dr Lorraine D. Price, UKCP Registered Psychotherapist, PhD Psych. M.A. Integrative Psychotherapy.
'Jessica Bowers offers potential therapy clients an inviting bridge from self-help literature to the waiting room. This compassionate work sets the standard for an under-resourced niche, with a treasure trove of materials to explore. Her relational approach to therapy shines through the text.'
Keith Duckett,Team Leader & Lead Therapist, Bereavement Support & Counselling Team, Walsall NHS Trust Specialist Palliative Care.
'Jessica Bowers has written a thoughtful, well considered and supportive book which discusses the process, concerns and needs of someone either seeking out therapy and/or waiting to commence in therapy. Here is the necessary information and support to those for whom the desire to start on their personal journey has begun and supports them well et the in the hiatus between the decision and the work itself. Jess Bowers has drawn on a wealth of personal, clinical and professional experience and accompanies the reader through this in between time. She is both the therapist and a friend offering a deep understanding of the issues and questions that are present in this space and shows what growth can come through knowledge and support. She answers the questions and concerns that we may not even know exist and walks alongside those preparing to embark on this journey of self knowledge and change making the therapy begin before it has formally done so. A book that I would recommend to any practitioner to suggest as support and developing readiness for their prospective clients that can enable the clients to develop awareness, confidence and even excitement at their journey ahead. A great book for any library.'
