In the New England coastal town of Consternation Springs, Birdie Briscoe runs Happy Medium, a psychic shop she inherited from her grandmother Leonora. And she's running it directly into the ground. In a town built on mystical gifts, Birdie has none. No visions, no readings, no connection to the other side. Just a struggling shop full of crystals and tarot cards, a geriatric cat with an attitude, and the quiet certainty that Leo would be horrified if she could see what's become of Happy Medium.

Then Leo's ghost shows up. Opinionated as ever and full of unsolicited advice, Birdie's grandmother has thoughts about the shop, about the handsome Finn Avery renovating the tavern across the street, and about the gifts Birdie has been too afraid to claim. But then a devastating nor'easter tears through Consternation Springs, and Birdie's friend Sierra is found murdered in its aftermath. To uncover the truth, Birdie enlists the help of Leo's spirit, not to mention a few other lingering ghosts.

Suddenly, Birdie sees ghosts everywhere--and they're talking. With Finn at her side, a network of restless spirits lighting the way, and her grandmother's voice in her ear, Birdie sets out to unmask a killer. Along the way, she might just discover that the gift she thought skipped her didn't skip her at all--it was simply waiting for her to be ready.
