Premee Mohamed is a Nebula, World Fantasy, Ignyte, and Aurora award-winning Indo-Caribbean scientist and speculative fiction author whose work spans novels, novellas, short fiction, and criticism. Her fiction has earned recognition from the Hugo, Locus, British Fantasy, British Science Fiction, and Crawford awards, and she has served as Writer-in-Residence at the Edmonton Public Library.

A brilliant sequel to a brilliant debut. It's kind and bloody-toothed, frantic and exhausted, hilarious and wracked with the sobs and laughs of survivor's guilt. It's a horror novel about teenage friendship and a teenage friendship novel about cosmic horror and you'll be hard pressed to decide which is more disturbing

At the end ofBeneath the Rising, narrator Nick Prasad is left heartbroken, betrayed and disillusioned by what he has learned about Johnny. I didn't think it could get worse for him. I was so wrong
If Mohamed's debut novel had my curiosity, the follow-up has my attention. A Broken Darkness is a strong follow-up that builds on the foundation of its predecessor and delivers strong writing through great characterization
