Beginning with Uruk, one of the earliest known cities, and extending to the contemporary smart city, Dr. Alaa Mahmoud Al Tamimi traces the long evolution of urban life and examines how cities have shaped-and been shaped by-power, memory, identity, technology, and the pursuit of justice.

Drawing on history, urban planning, engineering, political thought, and professional experience, the book asks fundamental questions: Who shapes the city? Whose interests does plan serve? How do streets, public spaces, housing, transportation, and institutions distribute opportunity and influence? And can technology create better cities if justice, participation, and human dignity are absent?

Through examples from ancient Mesopotamia, Baghdad, Paris, Washington, Toronto, and other cities, the author reveals how urban form can express authority, preserve collective memory, deepen inequality, or strengthen citizenship and belonging.
