This instructional Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu book & DVD combo offers a complete guide to ground fighting principles and techniques to use when the fight goes to the ground.

In a street defense scenario, the ground is a dangerous place to be. While it's a good idea to learn defensive strategies for ground fighting actively, it is important to put those skills into the context of how you want to use them. Whether you're an experienced submission-grappling competitor, a traditional martial artist training in a stand-up striking style, or law enforcement professional, Ground Defense provides you with an essential system of self-protection for street-oriented ground scenarios.

When the Fight Goes to the Groundestablishes the risks and hazards of various ground defense scenarios, presenting effective strategies for neutralizing and minimizing them. You will learn a wide range of tools for defense, including the targeting of vital areas, body shifting/control techniques, and the concept of "weapons of opportunity." All of these techniques are easy to learn and apply, providing an adaptable skill set for anyone, regardless of size, strength or gender. These tools are then shown in various combinations, with examples of how to use them against specific types of attacks, including simple hold-downs, ground and pound, submission grappling pins, chokes, arm locks, leg locks, knife attacks and multiple assailant scenarios.

In addition, this martial arts book gives you useful training suggestions and regimens, addressing graduated skill development, challenges presented by different body types, and safety practices at all levels of training.

Recenzii

"Jiu-jitsu expert Lori O'Connell shows you over 80 proven street oriented ground fighting techniques designed for the gritty, down-and-dirty world of street survival. MMA techniques are designed for sport. O'Connell's are designed to get you home—alive." —Loren W. Christensen, Martial Arts Masters Hall of Fame recipient, 2011

"When the Fight Goes to the Groundgets my endorsement. This is a work I intend to visit again in order to integrate some ideas and methods into my own training and teaching. If you're looking for practical, repeatable self-defense tactics for ground fighting that don't require high level acrobatics then this might be the book for you too." —Matthew Apsokardu, 4th Degree Black Belt, Okinawan Kempo Karate

"Highly recommended. 192 pages of clear and concise explanation, beautiful and clear photography, excellent binding, and a DVD full of bonus video explanations make this a great book for grapplers, stand-up artists, and self-defense enthusiasts." —Patrick Parker, 6th Degree Black Belt Aikido, 5th Degree Black Belt Judo

"When the Fight Goes to the Groundis extremely well written, easy to read and is professionally done. Sensei O'Connell expresses herself very well and is clear in her teaching progressions. The DVD is a tremendous compliment to the book. I highly recommend this book for those wanting to learn the concepts of self-defense when on the ground." —Brian Johns, Owner/Head Instructor of the Filipino Martial Arts school, Bamboo Martial Arts Centre

"First and foremost a big tip of the hat to Ms. O'Connell and Tuttle Publishing for creating a well-written and well-photographed book. I have written book reviews in an academic setting, and, on occasion, I've had to review books that are not as functional as this book. This, however, was not the case and what you will find in this book is clearly written and clearly illustrated. This book presents a practical and realistic approach to ground defense." —Bob Patterson, Author ofStriking Thoughtsmartial arts blog

"When the Fight goes to the Groundis an excellent source of information on something that is not often seen, and is presented cleanly and professionally. It's also wonderful to see something of this nature come from a smaller, female martial artist, rather than a larger person, who might not have as much "need" for good technique in such a situation. It is a good book that is deserving of attention from anyone who has an interest in the martial arts or self-defense." —Stu Cooke, 1st Degree Black Belt, Shorinji Kan Jiu jitsu

"The book is an excellent source of reference for students of grappling arts, a great introduction to using basic ground skills for those with little or no grappling or martial arts experience, and a good reference for established grapplers to look at the art from a self protection or woman's point of view. Well written and highly recommended." —Restita DeJesus, Head Instructor, Seattle Wushu-Self Defense Center

"When the Fight Goes to the Groundis an excellent book. I liked it a lot. It is a great introduction to the topic of defending yourself when the fight goes to the ground in the street from the perspective of Jiu Jitsu." —Wim Demeere, author ofThe Fighter's Body
