A highly illustrated textbook explaining the fundamentals of structural analysis, materials and design in one integrated volume. This integrated approach enables the student to tackle realistic design problems in the shortest possible time, and, because the relevance of the theory is immediately relevant, it is highly motivational. The text follows the process of design from initial concept through to final details. It focuses on using real data and avoiding a complex mathematical approach to encourage a feel and awareness for the physical behaviour of structures. Each stage of the design process is illustrated by a realistic numerical example which is based on genuine design data. The book is up-to-date for the Eurocodes.
The book is intended for first year undergraduates and BTEC students of civil and structural engineering, building, architecture and surveying. Because it contains a lot of real design data, it may also be useful as a work of reference for the non-specialist practitioner.

Textul de pe ultima copertă

The fifth edition of Understanding Structures remains the most accessible introduction to structural engineering for undergraduate students of civil engineering, building, surveying and architecture. It introduces you to structural analysis, materials and design, illustrating each stage with a wealth of examples, so that you can understand the real-life applications of your knowledge.

Understanding Structures
- Features a wealth of high quality illustrations and diagrams
- Includes end-of-chapter summaries and exercises to reinforce and test your knowledge
- Uses an enhanced student-friendly page layout

The fifth edition is fully up to date with the Eurocodes, and is an ideal introductory text for students of engineering and construction wanting to understand structural analysis, materials and design.
Solutions to the end of chapter questions are available on the book's companion website at

  • Popular, widely adopted text
  • A minimum of mathematical knowledge is required – largely simple algebra and trigonometry
  • Emphasis on understanding and so a large number of illustrations portray structural behaviour
  • Includes new Eurocodes – though focus on the student gaining a deep understanding of the principles of structural design rather than dealing with each code on a clause-by-clause basis
  • Unusually includes a chapter on structural loads - a vital stage in the design process yet rarely covered in textbooks
  • End of each chapter exercises to test understanding with online solutions are available
  • Fully updated
