The President's Daughter

en Limba Engleză Paperback – iun 2010
The president's daughter was a national novelty, the first teen-age girl to live in the White House in a half century. As she turns 21, in her father's second term, "America's Princess" feels like America's last virgin. She dreams of experiencing life and love on her own, and wants to prove she can fend for herself despite an insidious disease. But Mary Scott can't go anywhere without the Secret Service, until the day she disappears, in disguise, as Carole Burchard. En route to Europe aboard a passenger liner, "Carole" tries and fails to have an affair with Bert Decker. After a fateful kiss, Bert is the first to discover her true identity. He becomes wary, fearing a connection to her will expose his own secrets. He is on the run too, buying time to decide what to do about his life-changing problems. Still, he is captivated by her spunk. As they confide in each other, their relationship grows. Carole enters a 1960s world of hostels and hitchhiking on the continent while the government closes in on her. Along the way, she confronts the Dragon Lady, Powerful Pierre, and the Wild One, a motorcycle cop. She does experience life, but not in the way she planned. Her attempts to find romance and "S-E-X" are frustrated by timing and circumstance, including the cramped back seat of a Volkswagen. On the day she disappeared, Mary Scott left a note telling her parents "Don't worry about me." In reality, the President and the First Lady are right to worry about their runaway daughter's disease and her safety. Unknown to them, she endures a health crisis and other perils. By the time she returns home, or is returned home, she has found herself a new life, one that has changed dramatically.
