This critical edition of the work is based as far as possible on Locke's manuscript, and includes an editorial introduction, textual, manuscript, and explanatory notes, as well as transcriptions of hitherto unpublished papers by Locke.

John W. Yolton is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Rutgers University, New Jersey, and formerly General Editor of the Clarendon Edition of the Works of John Locke. Jean Yolton is a librarian and independent scholar.
