en Limba Engleză Carte Paperback – May 1994
The Author: Alfred Burns, born in 1912 in Vienna, Austria, is Professor Emeritus of Classics at the University of Hawaii. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, he received his M.A. and Ph.D. in Classics from the University of Washington. His research at many ancient sites has resulted in conference-presentations and in the publication of numerous articles in scholarly journals on literature, ancient history, philosophy and science, and in his previous book The Power of the Written Word: The Role of Literacy in the History of Western Civilization (Peter Lang, 1989).
This is the autobiography of a man who began his love of Greek and Latin literature at the Gymnasium in Vienna and after many obstructions and diversions returned to the Classics, took the doctorate, and began a successful career of teaching and research. It not only bears witness to the continued strength of Classics, it adds the experience of one who lived through Hitler's Europe and then made his way in this country. (John McDiarmid, Professor Emeritus of Classics, Seattle, WA)
