Really nice story adaptation. The artwork is flowy and organic, with interesting panels, interrupted at times by a full-page undercover illustration. From the colors that switch and follow the environment, like cold and magical purples to the outside or surrounding the darkling, to the warm oranges from the inside of the huts, or representing the other girls whom he befriends, I appreciated the contrast between these two. I also liked that there were many silent panels and the story unfolded easily through them. I really appreciated the tiny frames with movement suggestions, with a focus on hands and action gestures. It was charming and cute overall, although I thought the story to be a little too simple, or it followed a narrow timeline, or maybe I had too many expectations or just different ones. I felt like it ended so so soon. I admit I didn’t read the short story, and maybe it was adequate for the darkling’s age, his lack of social experience, and his loneliness. He’s depicted as being vulnerable and caring, and quite ruthless at the end, by the sudden change of perspective, but I guess it offers a good background for the character. I just wished I could see a deeper use of his powers.
