Notă biografică

Karen Timberlake is professor emeritus of chemistry at Los Angeles Valley College, where she taught chemistry for allied health and preparatory chemistry for 36 years. She received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Washington and her Master’s degree in biochemistry from the University of California at Los Angeles.
Professor Timberlake has been writing chemistry textbooks for 30 years. During that time, her name has become associated with the strategic use of pedagogical tools that promote student success in chemistry and the application of chemistry to real-life situations. More than one million students have learned chemistry using texts, laboratory manuals, and study guides written by Karen Timberlake. In addition to Chemistry: An Introduction to General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Tenth Edition, she is also the author of General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Structures of Life, Second Edition  and Basic Chemistry, Second Edition, along  with the accompanying Study Guide with Solutions for Selected Problems, Laboratory Manual, and Essentials Laboratory Manuall.

Professor Timberlake belongs to numerous science and educational organizations including the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). She was a Western Regional Winner of Excellence in College Chemistry Teaching Award given by the Chemical Manufacturers Association. In 2004, she received the McGuffey Award in Physical Sciences from the Text and Academic Authors Association, for her textbook Chemistry: An Introduction to General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry, Eighth Edition, which has demonstrated excellence over time. In 2006, she received the Textbook Excellence Award for the first edition of Basic Chemistry. She has participated in education grants for science teaching including the Los Angeles Collaborative for Teaching Excellence (LACTE) and a Title III grant at her college. She speaks at conferences and educational meetings on the use of student-centered teaching methods in chemistry to promote the learning success of students.

Her husband, Bill, is also a professor emeritus of chemistry and has contributed to writing this text. He taught preparatory and organic chemistry at Los Angeles Harbor College for 36 years.  When the Professors Timberlake are not writing textbooks, they relax by hiking, traveling, trying new restaurants, cooking, and playing tennis. The Timberlakes’ son, John, and daughter-in-law, Cindy, are involved in preparing materials for English language learners. Their grandson, Daniel, and granddaughter, Emily, don’t know what they want to be yet.

Caracteristici

  • Chapter openers and features contain photos and interviews with scientists and health care professionals who discuss the importance of chemistry in their careers.
  • Health, Environmental, and Green Chemistry Notes throughout the text relate chemistry chapters to real-life topics in health, the environment, and medicine that are interesting and motivating to students.
  • The accessible writing style is based on a carefully paced and simple development of chemical concepts. Chemical terms are given precise definitions and clear goals are set for each section of the text.
  • Guide to Problem Solving provides students with step-by-step strategies they need to master important quantitative problem types.
  • Questions and Problems follow every section and allow students to apply problem-solving to each concept just discussed.
  • Understanding the Concept questions at the end of each chapter to test students’ understanding of the basic ideas of chemistry rather than just the math facility in working quantitative problems.
  • Sample Problems with Study Checks help students read, recognize, set up, and solve numerous problem types, while developing critical thinking skills and building confidence before moving on to other topics.
  • Concept Maps, now found at the end of each chapter, give students a big picture overview of concepts and how they connect to each other.
  • Macro-to-Micro art illustrations visually connect the real-life world with atomic-level representations.
  • Explore Your World hands-on activities in each chapter make chemistry exciting, relevant, and non-threatening to students.
  • Media icons direct students to tutorials and case studies on The Chemistry Place website.
