6 lecturi care te vor duce departe de vremea de afară

Ador să plec în excursii, nu atât pentru destinație, cât pentru călătoria în sine. Ce poate fi mai plăcut decât, atunci când pleci la drum, să citești o carte bună, care să te ajute să te destinzi, să creeze un ambient plăcut, relaxându-te complet? Sau să pleci într-o călătorie doar citind cărțile potrivite?

1. Dubliners, James Joyce 

Excerpt:“He lived at a little distance from his body, regarding his own acts with doubtful side-glances. He had an odd autobiographical habit which led him to compose in his mind from time to time a short sentence about himself containing a subject in the third person and a verb in the past tense.”

3. A year in Provence, Peter Mayle

5. Speedboat, Renata Adler

Speedboat este un alt fel de ficțiune ce spune povestea jurnalistei newyorkeze, Jen Fain. Protagonistea ne poartă prin aventurile ei urbane: întâlniri proaste, petreceri nereușite, activități dubioase pe străzi.

6. Leaving the Atocha Station, Ben Lerner  

Excerpt:“Happy were the ages when the starry sky was a map of all possible paths, ages of such perfect social integration that no drug was required to link the hero to the whole.”

În acest roman de debut al lui Ben Lerner, protagonistul, un tânăr poet american, Adam Gordon, se luptă cu viața, cu propriul sine. În loc să lucreze la poemul său epic, își petrece timpul drogându-se și aberând despre arta și viața sa.

7. Invisible Cities , Italo Calvino 

Excerpt:“You take delight not in a city’s seven or seventy wonders, but in the answer it gives to a question of yours.”

Italo Calvino imaginează o conversație între exploratorul Marco Polo și Împăratul Kublai Khan despre toate orașele fantastice pe care Marco Polo le-a văzut. Autorul redă câteva pasaje despre modul în care călătorii interacționează cu locurile pe care le descoperă. Este o colecție suprarealistă, ce tratează teme mult mai profunde ca dorința, natura umană, amintirile.

8. Death in Venice, Thomas Mann 

Excerpt:“Nothing is stranger or more ticklish than a relationship between people who know each other only by sight, who meet and observe each other daily — no hourly — and are nevertheless compelled to keep up the pose of an indifferent stranger, neither greeting nor addressing each other, whether out of etiquette or their own whim.”

Gustav von Aschenbach se luptă cu blocajul scriitorului în timpul unei vacanțe în Veneția. Curând este zăpăcit de frumusețea unui adolescent cazat la același hotel cu el. În timp ce orașul este doborât de ciumă, Gustav cade într-o obsesie ucigătoare care-l trezește și care-l distruge ulterior.

9. We the Animals , Justin Torres

Este un roman despre familie, despre trei frați cu o foame de nepotolit. Familia lor este haotică, săracă, dar dragostea ce îi unește este puternică și povestită prin descrieri aproape magice. Este o poveste despre dezvoltare, descoperire și curaj.

10. The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway 

Excerpt:“It was dark now as it becomes dark quickly after the sun sets in September. He lay against the worn wood of the bow and rested all that he could. The first stars were out. He did not know the name of Rigel but he saw it and knew soon they would all be out and he would have all his distant friends. ‘The fish is my friend too,’ he said aloud. ‘I have never seen or heard of such a fish. But I must kill him. I am glad we do not have to try to kill the stars.’”

Parabola lui Hemingway despre bătrânul pescar, Santiago, și lupta sa constantă cu un pește-spadă este clasică pe bună dreptate: ideea de aristocrație în ambiție, luptă și eșec rămâne remarcabilă și în ziua de azi, așa cum a fost și în 1952.

11.Train Dreams, Denis Johnson 

Excerpt:“Now he slept soundly through the nights, and often he dreamed of trains, and often of one particular train: He was on it; he could smell the coal smoke; a world went by. And then he was standing in that world as the sound of the train died away. A frail familiarity in these scenes hinted to him that they came from his childhood.”

Pe fundalul Vestului american al sec. XX, extrem de schimbător, acțiunea romanului îl pune în scenă pe Robert Grainer în timp ce acesta își clădește o nouă viață după pierderea familiei. Este o poveste despre folclor, flexibilitate, pierdere și aventură.

12. A Small Place, Jamaica Kincaid 

Excerpt:“It is as if, then, the beauty—the beauty of the sea, the land, the air, the trees, the market, the people, the sounds they make—were a prison, and as if everything and everybody inside it were locked in and everything and everybody that is not inside it were locked out. And what might it do to ordinary people to live in this way every day? What might it do to them to live in such heightened, intense surroundings every day?”

În această proză autobiografică, Jamaica Kincaid abordează călătoria dintr-o perspectivă diferită: aceea a nativilor, al căror cămin este invadat de turiști. Kincaid vorbește despre amintirile ei  despre Antigua colonială, condamnând guvernul Antiguei, dar și industria turismului, punând în contrast vizitatorii cu rezidenții. Expune un adevăr dur, dar necesar de cunoscut, în special pentru cei care sunt turiști.
